What Should I Choose as a Career?
Question by thestoryisinthesoil: What should I choose as a career?
I’m a 23 year old female from upstate new york. I will be graduating with my master’s degree in biology in spring 2012 and I have to decide whether I want to try to get a job with that or move on to another school. I’m vegan so I definitely don’t want to work in a lab that tests on animals which seems to happen in a majority of them.
This summer I am going through a program to become a yoga teacher so I will have that as well. All of my friends and family are encouraging me to go to PA or med school but I am not very keen on western medicine. I tend to lead towards acupuncture and herbal remedies and things like that but I will have rather large student loans to pay off (after next year it will be over $ 80,000), so I have to take salary into account. For the longest time I wanted to be a chiropractor but I don’t want to go to school for that many additional years. Lately I’ve been thinking about acupuncture but that’s quite a few additional years as well.
My latest favorite idea is midwifery. It’s something I’ve always thought about but I’m worried about the job outlook. I plan on moving after I get my master’s, likely to san francisco or portland so perhaps the job outlook for midwifery is better out there. Any thoughts or suggestions? I’d like to be making enough money to comfortably make my loan payment and pay for housing and all of those simple things. Ideally, I’d like to make enough to begin saving money for a home.
Please help! I’m having such a hard time deciding so any ideas would be great! Thanks!
I seem to be getting some mildly hostile answers here. I posted a perfectly innocent question to get some real feedback not insults. I haven’t yet studied acupuncture so I don’t know that I believe in meridians or any of that. I’ve had it done a few times and I thought it was wonderful. I believe in both eastern and western practice but I don’t believe in the western medical practice of prescribing medicine for seemingly everything. I work in a hospital currently so I see it everyday. I think there are many instances in which prescription drugs are NOT necessary. Often diet or lifestyle change would fix the problem but americans seem to want to quick fix. They let themselves accumulate illness and then cover it up with drugs or surgery. That is what I want to stay away from. And when I talk about midwifery, I am speaking of midwifery in the united states. I know in New York state at least I have spoken to a lot of midwives and clients who have implied that getting insurance coverage ca
I really wasn’t asking for judgment here. I was asking for suggestions. I mentioned above that I don’t want to go to school for very many additional years, but below someone has suggested that I go to medical school. I really was hoping to get input as to whether midwives are having difficulty getting insurance coverage or if they are mostly covered now. I also wanted to hear about what people thought of Physicians Assistants. Also, if anyone had any other suggestions as to what I could look into.

You doing a master’s in biology and you believe in meridians and Qi???
And you can’t see the conflict this has with Vertebral Subluxation Complex??
And you can’t see the problem with crude drugs (herbs)?
Go with the midwifery, or do better research.
