My sister is out of control (drug related) and my Mom wants to have her committed. She has no children & no husband. She is 27 yrs old. Can my Mom commit her w/out her being able to check herself out??? How does that work????

She can be PC’d (protected custody) for a certain amount of time, but she would have to commit (section 12) herself. The only way to commit another adult is to go through the time consuming process of proving their incompetance and that they are a danger to themselves and the community through the court of law.

Depending on what state you are in…. In NC you can get them committed for an evaluation which is usually about 48 hrs. After that she has to want help to stay. Unless she is suicidal or homicidal then she can be involuntarily committed. But even that is for a short period. But I just want to let you know from experience that unless she wants help… or sees that there is a problem then it wont help her anyway.. God Bless your Family!
