There really are no advantages to “drug abuse.” I could be argued that experimenting with drugs can have some advantages.
Experimenting might allow people to meet others and make friends. It might be an enlightening experience. Often if a person tries a drug and hates its effects they are less likely to use or abuse any other drugs. And if a person tries something and it is no longer an unknown can reduce the likely hood of abuse (or increase it for some). And I suppose it can be said that using a drug (including alcohol) to help cope with an acute problem can be good. Often people get drunk or take a larger dose of their legitamite prescription medication(s) to feel better during the worst of a situation. I don’t really think that is a good idea but some do. And there is no doubt that long term chronic use of substances to cope will cause addiction.
Using drugs except for legitamite medical purposes and as prescribed by a doctor is fraught with consequence. Some people will develop a serious addition from a single use of a drug, often described as “I felt like I was home” . Many people die from a single use of certain drugs. Inhalant use kills about 33% of first time users. And drug use impacts family, friends, and the community. Recreational drug use is risky primarily because it can lead to addiction. However using drugs recreationally is partly defined for the fact that it has little or no consequences. The technical definition of drug abuse is that use of a drug has caused significant problems for the user (and/or others) yet despite the problems he still uses.
So the medical diagnosis of “drug abuse” is literally defined as using drugs even though they are causing significant consequences. So by definition there can not be an advantage. The only advantage could be when drugs are used recreationally and do not meet the requirements for drug abuse.
