America-along with many other industrialized nations-face numerous obstacles in dealing with substance abusers attempting to function normally in society. The need for Substance Abuse Counselors and Addiction Specialists are growing considerably, not just because of emerging younger addicts, but also because of older adults who have adopted errant behaviors conducive to compulsive drinking and drug use.

There are literally thousands of employment vacancies for drug and alcohol counselors, as well for specialists working with gambling, smoking cessation, and dual diagnosis addictive disorders. Check out the following job page for a preview of opportunities.

In addition, you may want to volunteer at a recovery center to determine if the field is right for you. Nearly all homeless shelters have a recovery program, as do the Salvation Army, Veteran’s Administration Hospitals, and Volunteers of America.
