Teen Caught Using Prescription Drugs – What Would You Do?

Question by Jill G: Teen caught using prescription drugs – what would you do?
I am hoping some people who have had kids do this – or kids who did this and now do not use drugs – help me.

Last week, we discovered that our 17 year old son was using multiple prescription drugs (Vicodin, Ambien, Lunesta, Adderall, Ritalin).

He bought them from a girl at school.

We feel like our world is coming to an end. We love our son, but fear addiction could make his life awful.

Any ideas on what we should do now?

So far, we grounded him and spoke with him repeatedly.

We would be very interested if you have some good ideas to help him see these drugs are not good for him and addcition is a real possibility.

If I were you I would search online and make some print outs of the harmful affects of addictions, and read them to your son, also explain to him everything in a calm manner. My uncle was addicted to prescription and none prescription drugs, he is in and out of jail all of the time he a has a few kids with different women and he has no custody at all of any of them he bounces around different places…hes a bum hes scum no one wants to know him….its sad how bad your life can get when you get in to that kind of lifestyle. If none of that works i would consider taking him to a couselor to get help!

I would send him to an outpatient rehab to seek treatment even if he wasn’t “addicted”. I would also look up horror stories online about how bad this addiction can become. Maybe even find a recovering addict and a current addict to tell their stories to him. Scare the crap out of him!! that’s what I would do.

I would also make sure the school was notified about this and make sure her parents know about their little drug dealer.
