How Can I Become a Train Driver/conductor (USA)?
Question by Mezz: How can I become a train driver/conductor (USA)?
I’m just a college student atm but I’m curious as to how one goes about becoming a train driver, preferably one that carries passengers not materials. Btw I’m in the Washington D.C. if that matters. Thanks 🙂

First, complete your degree; carriers like to see a college degree on your resume.
Keep in mind that, as a rule of thumb – and this is true of freight carriers – you cannot hire off the street as an engineer. Instead, you must first hire on for some other craft, such as trainman or car inspector; you can apply for their engineer school after a year in that craft.
(Note: You may be able to hire as an engineer for certain commuter rail agencies, so check around.)
Now, are you looking to remain in the DC area, or are you willing to relocate? If you’re willing to move, your opportunities expand.
