Question by tim p: hey is/ was anyone else here a GEOGRAPHY major in college? if so what do you do for a living?
i graduated 2 years ago with a bachelor’s in geography. i currently work for a major gas utility company as a GIS Analyst.

i did both geography and computer science, i am now at ESRI which produces GIS software.

I have an MA in geography. I worked as a cartographer in publishing for a short time, then went into K-12 education for personal reasons. I’ve been known to teach a class in geography at the local community college.

The folks I knew from the old department work as cartographers, professors, GIS analysts. Some of them have gotten other degrees, like law or MBA. Some work for government agencies, like Land and Natural Resources, for instance, or the Coast Guard.

One undergraduate geography major I know cannot divulge the name of the federal agency (based in Langley, VA) that she works for. Nor can she tell me what she does for a living, but I hypothesize that she analyzes aerial photographs taken in countries of dry climate and particular interest to the US government. A former grad school classmate is on the ground in one of those countries through his longtime commitment to a US military reserve organization. Another one is a peer counselor in drug rehab, but you know, it happens.
