What Is Wrong With My Generation?
Question by Aquamantor: What is wrong with my generation?
I have asked this question to no one in particular, multiple times, and I have asked it to my friend multiple times. Every time he answers simply “most people don’t make it into college” “most people don’t succeed” “there are meant to be a large amount of people willing to do low-paying labor jobs.”
What I’m seeing is far worse than that, however. I feel sometimes like there is this small percentage of people who have a good head on their shoulders, and everyone else isn’t even self-aware. Everyone does drugs, no one over 15 is a virgin. There was a girl three years younger than me who had sex with a drug dealer for cocaine. After a scuffle over it, her boyfriend took her back. At a bonfire started by some of my friends, multiple groups of people came and left when they saw that we didn’t have any drugs or alcohol. Someone who was my good friend for a period of time, an intelligent person with a natural understanding of science, is now in rehab in Colorado.
More than half of the parents of my friends are divorced. None of my friends with divorced parents are fully emotionally stable. Yet the parents fully believe that nothing is wrong. Most of them (parents of the baby-boomer generation) are pathetically stupid, selfish, and/or incapable of self-awareness. Most of the time, the question isn’t whether they know what their kids are doing, it’s whether they care. The final straw, I think, was when I heard a 14 year old girl defending some horrible activity carried about by her favorite celebrity with “everyone does it, come on, everyone does it, it’s normal.”
Now I’m 18. High school will be over soon, and I’m looking at everything behind me and I’ve realized: Is this what it’s like? Is this what growing up is? When you watch everyone around you crumble and destroy their lives? When you see why they were doomed from the start, trapped in a family that didn’t even love them? What happened to us, all of us? How did we end up this way? A society can’t survive like this. I can only imagine one of the teenagers today becoming the president of America. It’s going to happen to someone, maybe someone intelligent, but law of percentage says no.
What happened? How did it end up like this? Why did we start doing this to ourselves, and how will it ever stop?
Another thing I need to add is that the examples I gave all happened in a matter of months, among hundreds of other things I could use for what exactly is wrong. Such events are now commonplace.

Most teenagers don’t drink or do drugs. Many teenagers over 15 are virgins, only 10% of 15 year olds have had sex.
There are a handful who act like you described, and people only focus on them and assume all teenagers are like that. Those people give us a bad image.
