The Heat: Is American dream disappearing? – If you walk around Washington, DC, you will come face-to-face with not only the storied history of the city, but also its outcasts. They are everywhere, victimized by the economy circumstance, or lack of proper mental treatment. Thousands of homeless people are fending for themselves on the sidewalks and parks of the city. So, is anything being done to help them rebuild their lives? CCTV correspondent Sean Callebs hit the streets of DC to find out. Ronald Black, Former Homeless Person,said,”That’s be the most humbling thing — you have to sleep on concrete — it’s kind of disheartening.. You wake up and see blue sky and building and you know all these doors you can’t go in.” Ronald Black lived on the streets –for years, and doesn’t ever want to go back. A drifter’s and a beggar’s world he was forced in to after a razor thin safety net gave way. In Washington DC, it’s estimated more than 11 thousand people live on the streets. Ronald Black, Former Homeless Person, said,”The biggest misconception is that all homeless people are bums — not all of them are lazy.” Thrive DC, is one of a host of agencies –public and private –that offer assistance. Five days a week, people stream through for a healthy dinner, and in the morning hours breakfast. More than 200 meals a day are served. Elisbeth Melendez Rivera is one of the chefs at Thrive DC.
