is it more expensive for tax payers to keep people in prison or in substance abuse treatment facilities?

It costs more to keep people in prison than it does for substance abuse programs. You have to think about the set ups in the prisons as opposed to treatment programs. In treatment programs the setting is more like a home or college setting you have therapist and counselors you have someone who cooks and people to do the general cleaning but the participants of the programs do a lot of the work for the programs as part of their treatment. You don’t have to have armed guards, you don’t’ have as large a facility where you need someone to do the work around the facility. You don’t have to have a medical facility on site like they do in prisons you don’t have to have teaching facilities like most prisons do now a days. There are a lot more personal in volved with prisons than treatment centers which than requires more money to pay these people a salary.
